The End

Whew, I made it. I'd like to thank my small flock for the help and encouragement they provided through this often fun, but sometimes grueling and frustrating journey of discovery. It was refreshing to be able to stretch my wings and get a feel for all of the cool stuff out there on the Web. Our favorite by far was Flickr. There were so many cool photos AND things to do with them.

If this type of thing is available in the future you can count us chicks in! Maybe don't include the sandbox exercise next time. What with all the flailing about and false starts, I got sand stuck in places I never even knew I had.

Chicken Little (of course)

I thought it would be nice for us girls to gather 'round a steaming bowl of oatmeal and listen to a nice story this morning. I was able to download my personal favorite, Chicken Little. That Gosling Gilbert is sooooo, cute! The selection of chicken books and audio was very limited at MOLDI, but maybe in the future we'll have more to choose from. We'll make do, we always have.

Chickens that podcast

Well, just when you think you've heard everything, what comes along but farting chickens. Yes, seriously, an entire web page devoted to farting chickens. http://www.fartingchickens.com/

And, now here's the best part, they have podcasts of said chickens passing gas. The one titled A Day in the Country is quite humorous. Not that I condone such activity. No, not at all. Any self respecting hen will agree with me. Roosters, now they're a totally different story. I'm not even going to go there (especially since we had broccoli last night).

YouTube Chickens

Holy cow! You won't believe all the cool chicken videos I found on YouTube. There's even one called Elvis the Library Chicken. I bet he gets to read all the cool chicken books first!

Here's my favorite:

Chickens using Power Tools?

Typically I'd say that chickens shouldn't be allowed to use power tools. Mostly because they're not ergonomically suited to us, you know, not having opposable thumbs and all. But the library offers some Web power tools that you can't really hurt yourself with, so I flew on over and took a look.

I checked out BoingBoing. What I thought would be a list of cool stuff really only struck me as a mish mash of random blog posts. More of a time waster than anything else, but hey, I'm a chicken and I've all the time in the world. Nothing going on at the coop except a lot of pecking, drinking (water) and dozing. No egg laying yet. I'm just not in the mood.

Chick star

As a yound chick I never thought all that much about fame and popularity. But now that I'm a chicken starlet it's only natural the others would be interested in my chickhood antics.

Docs for Googling Chickens

Who knew chickens could write poetry. Seems rather easy to throw a few sorta related words together and you can call it poetry. Here's what I came up with and it only took me 2 minutes, dang, I'm good! And it helped that Google Docs was so easy to use.

Chickens, chickens everywhere.
Can you find a chicken?
Listen for the rooster,
He'll guide you.
But be warned, he's protective and mean.

Chickens in the sandbox

Who says chickens don't like to play in the sand? We love it!! We tried to make a sand coop, but things just didn't work out with these unhelpful claws. However, we did enjoy eating some of the sand for our daily grit ration. We thought it would be fun to add a picture of Melville Dewey to the decor of the sandbox. Shoot that place needs some sprucing up.

Chiki wiki

Wiki sounds a lot like tiki and that makes me think of torches and roasting marshmallows in summertime.* I asked Goosey Loosey and she said there was a Chicken Wiki, but it wasn't very good and she didn't see how it related to the library, but here it is anyway: http://chickens.wikispaces.com/ Seems like we should get on this wiki and help out the poor schmo who's running the show. We could teach him a thing or two. He should add a link to his wiki that goes to the library since they have so many cool books about chickens; non-fiction of course, and some good fiction too.

*Of course we can't roast marshmallows ourselves, but if some nice person were to do it for us we'd be most grateful. We'd end up in a sticky wicket, but hey, there's sacrifices to be made every day.

Open WorldChicken

I heard through the grapevine about this new thing called Open WorldCat. Some business about sharing the OCLC database with the world. I don't see why they chose a cat as their mascot. Chickens are smarter, lovelier and can fly (when their wings haven't been clipped). Chickens have been serving man and the world since time began. Seems like cats are only on this earth to look down on you. I beg you to name one culture that doesn't have chickens. Those folks at OCLC are a few eggs shy of a dozen if you ask me.

Delicious? Ahem, I think not.

Through the del.icio.us site I found a video of Gordon Ramsey cooking eggs. By typing in 'eggs' I was hoping to learn how to lay a golden egg. That'll teach me to be more explicit in my searching. I had no idea that's what the humans do with our eggs! How can they do such a thing. Where's Foghorn? We have to do SOMETHING about this outrage!

Wedding gifts

So you don't know what to get your best friend for her wedding? I've got just the solution. Silver-plated feeder and waterer will fit the bill perfectly. They're durable and pretty. Not to mention that you can look for that unwanted extra flap of skin and feathers under your neck when you tip your head back to swallow. Very handy indeed.

Check out some of the sweet tweets I posted on Twitter. I named it after myself. I don't ever get tired of seeing my new, married name in print. HennyLeghorn HennyLeghorn HennyLeghorn. Ahhhh.

Books to curl up with in a cozy nest box

Books are rather cumbersome things, aren't they? I find if you can open them with your beak and scratch some of the pages out, you'll get yourself a nice bit of bedding for your nest boxes. Not that I'm at all like Martha Stewart, but some of those pulp fiction tomes make for a very functional nest. Some of those glossy coffee table books have very thick, rough paper. I wouldn't bother trying those, it's like sleeping on the ground for heavens sake.

I have heard talk of a hen who can actually read over at the Cuthbert Farm. She's a wild thing, talking about aliens and meteors falling from the sky. That's all we need to start a riot! I hope she comes to her senses and keeps her beak shut.

Who laid the golden egg?

Seriously girls, who laid it? And it's quite the mystery how it got WORDS on it. No one is fessing up? Well, I guess I'd be embarrassed too if I had such an abnormal egg come out of me. We'll hide it from the humans and gaze upon it's shininess on those cold winter days ahead.

Seems someone's been fooling around with the roosters, um, I mean LetterJames. http://www.letterjames.com/start.php?mod=image-personalization

025.431

It seems there's a blog for everything. Lucky for us we're able to get one about the Dewey Decimal Classification. Frankly I don't understand why eggs need classification. What they really need is a good sit down with a hot cup of tea. But seriously, I hear there's folks out there who actually like to classify things, so this is the place for them. They even go so far as to call one of the posts "Organizing knowledge with our friends." It's good they have friends, because normal folks just wouldn't understand. If you're thinking you'd like to do some community service, you could be their friend for a day. Check it out at http://ddc.typepad.com/.

So many eggs, so little time

The girls and I visited Bloglines today and we saw all the cool stuff you can subscribe to. There weren't very many chicken related topics, but we did sign up to get all the latest and greatest books from the library about chicken through the library's RSS feed. I don't know if we'll have too much extra time to come back though. We're very busy obsessing about our adolescent appearance, and what the boys wrote about us on the nest box wall. Oh well, soon we'll be laying eggs and wondering where those eggs keep disappearing to every day.

Energy from the sun?

Turkey Lurkey and I went to Lowe's the other day to get some solar lights so we're not so afraid of the evil darkness. Well, you wouldn't believe the teeny tiny bit of light those things give off. I couldn't read my favorite novel (Poultry in Motion) by it, let alone have my fears assuaged. I hear there's been a man on the moon, but that sure ain't helping us chickens.

The many colors of the sky

A fun thing we found on Flickr is the kaleidoscope tool. This image is created from a picture of a Light Brahma rooster (isn't he dreamy looking).
Oh, and by the way, the sky isn't falling. Whew. How do I know this? Well, I checked out the color picker on Flickr. You should check it out too and maybe your paranoia about large falling objects would be alleviated. Of course you don't have to click on the blues to find this out, any color is fun.

Good morning sunshine

This morning as the sun was attempting to rise, the girls and I heard the feeble, voice cracking crow of our adolescent rooster. Boys! Always trying to show off!

Now I can repay our one neighbor for her screamingly loud alarm clock.

The sky is not falling

Contrary to popular chicken belief, the world doesn't end when the sun sets every evening. Although it does seem like a miracle that it rises every morning. How does it do that?
